Tesla to launch BMW 3-series rivals in 2016

Work on Tesla’s third model line — a range of cars to rival the BMW 3-series — remains on track for a launch in 2016, according to company vice president Jerome Guillen.

Speaking at the Detroit motor show, Guillen said that the car would be on sale within three years, and cost around half the price of the Tesla Model S, indicating a price of around £25,000.

“We are working on the Model X SUV now and then the third-generation car remains on track for launch in three years,” he said.

The new model is expected to boast more distinctive styling than the relatively conventional Model S.

However, he talked down expectations that Tesla could develop a pick-up, chiefly for the US market. “We are busy enough at the moment with our plans for the Model X and third generation car,” said Guillen.
